Strategic Plan: Executive Summary

William R. Eidle

Dean, School of Social & Behavioral Sciences

Dr. Eidle has served on the Marist College psychology faculty since 1965. He became Chair of the Psychology Department in 1976, Chair of the Division of Social & Behavioral Sciences in 1981, and Dean of the Division in 1995. He graduated from Fordham University in 1958 with a B.S. in biology. In 1966 he received his Ph.D. in psychology from the Fordham University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

During his tenure as Chair of the Division, Dr. Eidle has seen student enrollments in undergraduate programs quadruple. He had primary responsibility for developing the psychology/elementary/special education major, the five-year B.A./M.A. program in psychology, the M.A. in educational psychology, the M.A. in school psychology, and NYSED- approved advanced certificate programs in school psychology.

Dr. Eidle's graduate training emphasized experimental and physiological psychology; however, his career development has moved in the direction of a more humanistically oriented psychology. Since 1978, his scholarly efforts have sought to demonstrate the value of integrating the contributions of philosopher/theologian Bernard Lonergan on generalized empirical method within the formulation for the foundational construction for psychology as a science. The integration of Lonergan's work with that of psychologist Ira Progoff, founder of holistic depth psychology and the intensive journal method, provides the basis for Dr. Eidle's course, the Development of Consciousness. Similarly, he has integrated Lonergan's work with that of Edwin Deci and Richard Ryan (Intrinsic Motivation) and Nathaniel Branden (The Six Pillars of Self- Esteem) for his course, Intrinsic Motivation and Self Esteem. Again, Dr. Eidle integrates Lonergan's work with that of Tom Likona (Educating for Character) and Kevin Ryan and Edward Wymae (Reclaiming Our Schools) for his graduate course, Educating toward the Acquisition of Values.

Dr. Eidle has authored a number of publications associated with these scholarly and course-related interests including his book, The Self-Appropriation of Interiority: A Foundation for Psychology, 1990, Peter Lang, Inc.

Dr. Eidle is a New York State-licensed psychologist. He serves on the board of St. Cabrini Home, Inc., and the Advisory Board for Concord Village, A Community for Enriched Retirement Living.

He is very active in Cursillo English for the Archdiocese of New York, serves as Coordinator for Renew, Inc. at his local parish, and is a formation instructor for the Secular Order of St. Francis.

Dr. Eidle is married, the father of three grown children, and has two grandchildren.
