Now that many programs allow users to save documents as a Web Page there is less need to learn HTML the language of the Internet. What is required is a good means of making the transfer from PC to mainframe server (UPLOAD) and from server to PC(DOWNLOAD).

Fortunately, there is a FREE program to do this very efficiently for those with the patience to download and install it with their browser. The program is called WS_FTP LE and is available is both 16 and 32 bit form. To receive a copy point your browser at: http://download.cnet.com/. If you start from a browser like NETSCAPE or INTERNET EXPLORER you need to minimize them before you start WS_FTP LE. When you start this program for the first time, you will need to set up for your account. It comes with an interesting array of world wide web sites already encoded from which you may download.

The startup page will look like the one shown above. Of course you would change the XXX in the account number to your own unique three digit number on the Marist College mainframe computer.

Once your connection to the Marist College mainframe is made, you will see a window that looks very much like the one above.

On the left side is a listing of files and folders on the drive of your PC to which it is pointed. In the sample show above it is pointed toward the B: drive. The scroll arrow at the right side of the window allows you to reset it to any of the other storage devices connected to your PC.

On the right side is a window showing all files and folders stored on the Marist Mainframe account. You can use the scroll bar to move up the window up and down to see all of the files and folders.

On either the PC (Local System) or mainframe (Remote System), you can use your mouse to click on a folder to open it and show the files it contains.

Between the two system windows you will find a pair of arrows that look like this:

The upper arrow id for DOWNLOAD (Remote System to Local System) and the lower arrow is for UPLOAD (Local System to Remote System).

To UPLOAD a file to the Mainframe, click on the file name in the Local System window that is to be uploaded. Open the folder on the Remote system where the uploaded file is to stored, and lastly, click on the lower arrow to start the transfer.

To DOWNLOAD a file to your PC, click on the file in the Remote system that you wish to place on your PC and reset the drive window on the left side to insure the file is transferred to the proper storage device. Lastly click on the upper arrod to start the transfer.
