This paper is based on a talk I originally presented at the 1992 VM Workshop, and subsequently at Australasian SHARE/GUIDE 27, SHARE 80 (Winter 1993), GUIDE 82 (Fall 1993), SHARE Europe SM94 (Brussels), VM MasterClass 1994 (Munich), IBM VM/VSE Conference 1996 (Rome), IBM's Endicott Programming Labs and Washington System Center, at MVMUA, Hillgang, NEUVM, and Twin Cities VM User Group meetings, System Center Inc's (now Sterling Software) 1993 conference, and the 1993, 1994, and 1996 VM/ESA Technical Conferences. The paper is based on my talk's overhead transparencies (foils) followed by whatever ad-lib comments I made at the time and can reconstruct. You can read it as Jeff's foils, followed by his ad-libs, or as a paper based on Jeff's talk with the original transparencies as illustrations. This originally was a GML document, and now is in HTML.
Please note in advance that this paper vividly expresses my opinions, which are not necessarily those of my employer or anyone else. I'll frequently make teasing or disparaging references to other systems - if you're a fan of these systems I hope you're not offended, and separate the serious comments from the ones intended for humorous effect.
