"Faces" of the 1997 VM Workshop

One of the best parts of the VM Workshop is getting the chance to meet VM'ers "old" and new and exchange information and ideas. The casual, academic setting creates an environment of comradeship which is unique to the VM Workshop.

Here are some of the faces (famous and infamous, alike) seen at the 1997 VM Workshop at McGill University, Montreal Canada. Most of the photos were taken by Martha McConaghy. Those pictures donated by others are noted by each picture.

Scenes from the Welcome Reception:

The gathering of the VM'ers has begun.

"So, Dieter, how do you count all those ducks?" (Dieter Bonas and Robert Reuscher)

An innocent bear awaits its grizzly fate.

Everyone knows, the fastest way to a VMer's heart is through their stomach. So, in Montreal, we found paradise!

Could this be considered "cannabilism"? If only he wasn't made of chocolate!

The "brain trust" of VM begins to gather. (left to right: Gina Chong, Jim Adams, Melinda Varian, Marty Zimelis, Chuck Morse, Dieter Bonas, Romney White)

Plotting session strategy is the first order of business.

"Something tells me I'm not in Kansas anymore." Kathleen Schedlock tries to figure out the VM'ers including George Schedlock and Terrence Zellers.

Studying the poetic prose of the Workshop agenda.

Those junior programmers seem to get younger every year. Alexander Chong makes his Workshop debut. (Romney White, Gina, Alexander and Rich Chong, Faye Martin and Michael Short)

"You mean, you actually want to pay twice???" Anne-Marie Marcoux keeps control over the chaos. (Nick Gimbrone)

"Quick, is Anne-Marie looking? No! Time to sneak another registration form!"

Scenes from some presentations:

"Day 1" - time to get down to business.

Glen Matthews of McGill University Computing Centre welcomes everyone to Montreal.

A Workshop favorite, Melinda Varian.

Some of the "best and brightest" in VM attend the Workshop.

Attendees prepare to listen to a presentation on the future of VM.

Melinda Varian describes the latest developments in CMS Pipelines.

Workshop attendees listen intently as a speaker describes the latest in VM advances.

Some of our favorite "beamers":

Ron Thompson, the VM Product Manager discusses the current status of VM and its future.

"If we make the schedule changes, will you let us out of this cell?" Scheduling assistants John Roman and Maryrita Steinhour get alittle desperate as the Workshop approaches.

Our very own "Gang of 5", VM developers answer questions and address concerns during a dialog session. From left to right: Brian Wade, Bill Bitner, Maryrita Steinhour, John Roman and Romney White.

Some relaxed moments:

Waiting for Godot? No, just waiting for the Metro. (Maryrita Steinhour, Tony Reyelts, John Roman, Barton Robinson and Simin Tarhabi)

One of Montreal's many famous sights. (No, not the Hawaiian shirt contest.)

Everyone relaxes after a hard day of "workshopping".

Ben Trahan discusses the mysteries of MUSIC/SP (unashamed plug) with Frank Pettinicchio of the MUSIC Product Group (McGill University).

George Schedlock, the keeper of the "Tools tape" archives.

Meeting new and old friends is one of the best parts of the Workshop. (Richard Waite, Claire Biron, and Betsie Spann)

Our intrepid hostess, Anne-Marie Marcoux and her main fella, Gordon Rouleau.
